To Spray Tan or Not Spray..That is the Question?
7/6/11
A common question I get from Brides is whether or not they should spray tan before their big day. For those brides that want the sun kissed glow without the tan lines or damaging their skin... I say... definitely yes. A great spray tan looks wonderful.
However, there are few key things to remember. First if you are even toying with the idea of spray tanning, then a few weeks prior to your wedding, try it first. This will enable you to decide which spray tanning color level best suits your skin type. Once you are familiar with the results, I would recommend spray tanning 3 days prior to your wedding. The reason is because you should for at least 6 hours after you spray tan. I normally spray tan in the evening and then go to bed and shower in the morning. Then you still have two days to correct any imperfections before your big day.
Second, as an avid spray tanner myself, I recommend a salon that offers a Versa Spa spray tan or one that hand air sprays you. On the eastern shore, I recommend Beach Fever in Salisbury, MD because they have the Versa Spa system. For an fantastic airbrush spray tan, Creative Hair & Nails in Ocean City, MD is one of the best.
Third to get the best results, shave, exfoliate and moisturize the morning before you spray tan. And wear loose fitting dark clothing to put on after your spray tan. You want to be sure to avoid showering in getting your skin wet for at least 6 hours after you tan. When you go to tan, they will provide you with a lotion or barrier cream to put on areas you don't want the spray tan to adhere to. Be sure to put the thick coat of the cream on the bottom of your feet, just below the ankles, your toe nails, your finger nails and cuticles, between your fingers and on the palms of your hands. Do not rub it in. Make sure you put the hair cover on and pull it back so that at is not resting on your forehead and your ears are not covered. Then when you tan, be sure to spread your fingers and lift your neck, you do not want to be in just one position when the spray solution is coming out. If you are in a Versa Spa, the machine will direct you as to which positions to move. If you are being airbrushed, they will tell you which way to move your body as well.
After you shower the next morning, be sure to really moisturize your skin and keep doing so that the spray tan will last. You can also use a moisturizer with a little self tanner it if you feel the glow is fading at all. Be sure not to exfoliate after the spray tan unless you have some areas you need to smooth out. If your palms were accidentally tanned, use a pumas stone to remove it.
The spray tan solution does come out of most clothing. However, by spray tanning a few days prior to your big day, most of the color that would transfer to your clothing will have already come off, so the transfer to your dress should be minimal.
Happy Tanning!
